‘Stop being nice, please. Start being authoritative’, Fiona Smith, The Australian Financial Review, 24/05/11

"If you want to get anything done, you have to be liked. But being liked is not enough. This is a trap many people fall into: they crave the approval of others and so they are nice to everybody.

 

They back down in arguments, let others go first, try to make everyone in the room happy and they smile, smile, smile - sometimes until rictus sets in.
